Frequently asked questions

What is Financial Coaching?

Perhaps the best way to answer is to quote from the Dave Ramsey website:

Working with a Ramsey Solutions Master Financial Coach can get you where you want to go with your finances.

The highest priority of our coaches is to guide, equip and encourage you to make the best financial decisions for you.  The sessions are effective and affordable, and you only pay for the time you need.

Best of all, our qualified coaches specialize in providing solutions rather than selling products — it’s the support you need, without the annoying sales pitch.

If you’re looking for face-to-face, personalized help with your money, a financial coach is exactly what you need.

How is a Financial Coach different from a Financial Advisor or Planner?

Coaching is a personalized look at your full financial situation in order to recommend the next steps that make the most sense for you. This can run the gamut from budgeting, insurance, debt, saving, giving, taxes, and investing. A coach looks at everything and prioritizes the next best steps. The coach has no financial products to sell that might influence the recommendations.

Specific investment recommendations, however, are outside the scope of a financial coach. A coach can educate on different types of investments, but can not recommend (or sell) specific investment products. For that you’ll likely want an investing professional, and your coach can help you know what to look for when you’re ready.

Can't I just take Financial Peace University and skip the Financial Coaching?

Of course! FPU sets a fantastic foundation across a broad range of financial topics, and there are numerous resources for you to drill down deeper when needed. If you find you need a little help in applying the principles from FPU to your specific circumstances, that’s where a coach can help. Also, as FPU highlights, managing money well is only 20% head knowledge and 80% behavior. A coach can provide some accountability for the behavior portion!

Why does my spouse need to come to the coaching session?

Because this is a team sport! Financial peace in the marriage is only possible if both spouses are using the same playbook. It’s a waste of your money and your coach’s time if only one spouse is trying to do this on their own. One spouse can do all the financial management in the household, but beg/plead/bribe your spouse to come to the coaching session!

I'm single, why do I need to bring a friend with me to the coaching session?

Managing money well is not easy. When we are deep in managing our own affairs, we can have blind spots. A friend will point out those blind spots and help hold you accountable to the steps you commit to. Having a friend like this at the coaching session is invaluable!

Do you work for Dave Ramsey?

No.  The title of “Ramsey Solutions Master Financial coach” comes from the training program.  Specifically, the certification states:

The above is an independent financial coach who is neither an agent nor employee of, nor subject to the direction of, Dave Ramsey.

What geographic area do you serve?

As implied in the name “Financial Coaching ATX” the focus was the Austin, TX area where I could buy you a cup of coffee during our face-to-face coaching session! However, with the arrival of COVID-19, all appointments moved to Google Meet, and therefore I’m able to serve anyone in the country.

Can I really get paid for a referral?

Absolutely! If I’ve helped you through coaching, I’d be honored if you would refer a friend who could also use help. If they sign up and pay for a coaching session based on your referral, I’ll send you a $25 Amazon Gift Card!
